Immortal Beloved ~ the movie

Immortal Beloved (released in 1994 and starring Gary Oldman) is one of my favorite movies, and also happens to be about my favorite classical composer:  Beethoven.  The title is based on Beethoven's infamous deathbed letter to the love of his life.  Oldman delivers an Oscar-worthy performance as Beethoven, the story is at once raw and beautiful, and the score was edited to perfection.  Amadeus got many deserved accolades, but I think Immortal Beloved is even better.  If you have seen it, I'd love to know your thoughts...
 the letter, translated:

This is an extraordinary performance of his Concerto #5 - the second movement (at 21:15) moves me to tears every time.  The pianist is Krystian Zimerman. I love Bernstein's expressions throughout!

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy ~ new album!

I love, love, LOVE the Voodoo Daddies.  They emerged around the time I started swing dancing in the early 90s, and I couldn't get enough.  They just released a new album (a tribute to the great Cab Calloway) called How Big Can You Get.  Click on the image below to listen to clips and order the album...
...and give a listen to "Calloway Boogie"...

Have you heard John's newest album, Born and Raised?  It's a great one!
Visit my other blog, When the Moon Rises, for a gorgeous acoustic version of Free Fallin', also sung by John.

LA BOHÈME - Juliette Greco

I first heard this song in a Paris cafe, and hearing it takes me right back to that moment...it's perfect with Sunday morning coffee.

Joscho Stephan Trio - Playing Minor Swing

Django Reinhardt's Minor Swing is one of my favorite jazz pieces.  I've heard a lot of great versions, but this one is amazing!
